Year–end banquet kicks off 20th year celebration for Route 20 Road Challenge
The banquet capping off the 2018 season for the Route 20 Road Challenge also signaled
the start of the 20th year for the popular running series in 2019.
The event was held at Hotel Solsville, Solsville on Saturday, February 23. Around thirty enthusiasts attended the event where awards were given out to over twenty runners.
Road Challenge coordinator Craig North presented a short history of the series which began in the year 2000. The series ties together a number of small town running events ranging from 5k’s to a half-marathon, from Esperance to Nelson, east and west, and Rome to Cooperstown, north and south. Its format is unique in the running world and those who participate in a certain number of events earn recognition in awards ranging from gift cards to the past year’s top prize, an Under Armor running shirt.
Runners completing the challenge this year (at least nine races of the nineteen on the schedule) included Mary Pustay, Phillip Metzger, Kevin Hoehn, Craig North, Elizabeth Fish, Terri Woodford, Sarah Law, Jean Kosina, Susan Will, JoAnne Securra, Courtney Spatto, Alex Gifford, Joy Gifford, Jessica Powers, Alexis Lefever, Chris Lefever, Amy Markowicz, Jennifer Caloia, Ralph Rathbun, Amy Rathbun, and Patricia King.
Co-coordinator Bill Kosina introduced the runners and also presented the new-thisyear Most Improved Runner award to Sarah Rathbun.
‘Goodwill ambassador’ Kevin Hoehn presented this year’s Kermit Award to Terri Woodford of Oxford. In the presentation, he cited the award’s namesake, the late Kermit Cadrette who began running in his sixties and was such a positive influence on runners of all ages.
Major sponsors for the Road Challenge include Hotel Solsville; Pierce Auto Parts, Bouckville; and Stewart’s Shops.
This year’s schedule is close to completion and will include around twenty races.
